John A. Garland was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia.  After graduating high-school in 1996 John left Georgia to attend the University of Vermont, where he graduated magna cum laude in 2000.  John then returned to his Georgian roots to obtain his J.D. at the University of Georgia, School of Law where he graduated cum laude in 2004.  Following graduation John joined his father, Ed Garland, at the Atlanta law firm of GARLAND, SAMUEL & LOEB.  John's practice is focused on advocacy at the trial level, including criminal defense as well as personal injury, product liability and professional malpractice.

Some of John's notable cases include:

  • In 2005-06 John represented Parvesh Singh in Federal Court in the Northern District of Georgia against the accusation that Mr. Singh, in his capacity as financial aid director ofMorris Brown University , committed financial aid fraud that lead to the collapse of Morris Brown University .  Though he was potentially facing years in prison, John along with his father Ed Garland negotiated a plea that resulted in 18 months home confinement.
  • John currently represents former City of Atlanta Police Officer Jason R. Smith in both Federal and State court on multiple charges including violation of oath of office and felony murder stemming from the shooting death of Kathryn Johnston by City of Atlanta Police in her home in Atlanta in 2006.  Facing possible life imprisonment, John along with his father Ed Garland negotiated a plea that resulted in 12 years of incarceration with a strong possibility for less depending on the strength of Mr. Smith's cooperation in the ongoing investigations of the shooting death of Ms. Johnston and corruption in the City of Atlanta Police Department.
  • John currently represents Atlanta based Hip-Hop DJ and mix-tape creator DJ Drama on RICO charges arising out of allegations that he produced mix-tapes without the proper authorization from the artists and labels.
  • John currently represents Bishop Thomas Wesley Weeks III on charges of aggravated assault based on the allegation that he attacked his wife and fellow preacher Juanita Bynum.
