What Steps Should You Take Immediately After A Car Crash?

After a car accident in Georgia, emotions are most likely to be running high. You or a loved one may also be injured, further adding to the confusion. It can be overwhelming dealing with the aftermath of a crash, but it’s important to take the right steps.

State Farm provides several tips of what to do following a car crash. These include the following:

  • If there are any injuries, get the appropriate medical attention, including an ambulance if necessary. If the severity of the injuries are unclear, calling an ambulance is better than risking later complications.
  • Move your car out of traffic if possible.
  • Call the police and your insurance agent, even if the accident is minor.
  • Take down witness information and any notes about the accident, including what happened immediately prior to the accident and the damage to both vehicles.
  • Do not leave the scene of the accident until law enforcement clears you to do so.

It may be tempting to apologize to the other party after an accident, but it’s best to avoid this temptation. Saying sorry can be a sign of admitting fault, which you should never do even if you believe you caused the crash. This is a matter that’s best sorted out by authorities and insurance companies.

If you are seriously hurt in an accident, it may be difficult or impossible to take these steps immediately. In this case, a trusted family member or friend should act as your advocate to ensure your interests are protected. For this reason, it’s always a good idea to carry a card with your medical information and other details in your wallet or glove compartment. It is important to remember that this information should not be taken as legal advice.
