Albany driver injures police officer while texting

Distracted drivers are increasingly at fault in car accidents. Cell phones pose a dangerous distraction for those who choose to text while driving and for everyone sharing the road with them.

Texting and driving is illegal in the state of Georgia. Law enforcement officers are reminding motorists about the dangers of texting while driving, as one of their own was recently injured by a 22-year-old Lee County driver who was distracted by her cell phone while on the road.

The woman had allegedly been checking her phone for text messages when she hit the car of a police officer, then bounced off to crash into a parked car. The 44-year-old officer was injured, but has since been released from the hospital. The man in the parked car did not suffer any injuries. The woman now faces charges including texting while driving and driving without her license.

A spokesperson from the Albany Police Department warns drivers that texting while driving can be deadly. Drivers should remember the law and keep their eyes on the road, rather than on their phones, to prevent causing accidents and serious injury to others. Texting can wait until the driver is able to safely pull over and use their phone.

Causing an accident by driving negligently is not only dangerous, but can result in serious litigation. Anyone who has been injured by a negligent driver can speak with a personal injury lawyer to see how the law affects them regarding compensation for medical expenses and damages.
