Statistics show Atlanta roads have worst safety record in Georgia

Since Atlanta is the largest city in the Peach State, it is no surprise that its roads are known to be the riskiest. Still, it could be somewhat surprising that all the worst roads for safety in the entire state are in Atlanta.

Study: Atlanta roads lead the way for Georgia accidents

According to MoneyGeek, the least safe roads in Georgia are all in Atlanta.

Using National Highway Traffic Safety Administration numbers for 2018 to 2020, it looked at more than 4,300 fatal accidents. While driver behavior was a known cause of the accidents, the highest number of collisions were on certain roads, which suggests other factors are relevant.

Interstate 285 had two places on the list in different locations. Also on the list: I-20 between exits 71 and 65.

Atlanta scores well for distracted driving

Perhaps surprisingly, only 3.6% were connected to distracted driving. Atlanta had one of the best safety rates in the nation in that context.

There has been a concerted effort to address distracted driving and that might be having a positive impact. Twenty percent of accidents in the state involved a drunk driver. Speeding was a cause in 19% of accidents.

That aside, roads design is a contributing factor. For example, some roads do not have a formal ramp for drivers to get on and off. Many do not have dividers.
